Project Overview
In March 2017, GB completed the design of the Luminapa water system and is currently seeking funding to start construction. This system will provide clean water to 350 beneficiaries.
Luminapa, Honduras
There is currently no system in Luminapa to bring clean water to the homes of community members. There are two wells powered by a hand pump located about a 15-minute walk from the nearest home. Community members carry this water in buckets to their homes, but very few have a way to safely treat and store water to remove waterborne illnesses. The existing wells are also unable to handle the capacity needed to bring water to the entire community. The existing Water Council in Luminapa is not well-organized, but they oversee the maintenance of the well every 3 months. Luminapa was supposed to be included in a water project funded by the municipality of Langue in 2013. Although Luminapa is supposedly included in this project, the details of the project have not been solidified due to the lack of funds.
Water System Solution
The watershed in the area of Luminapa is dry and arid with no vegetation. Therefore, it is not possible to locate a nearby water source to supply a gravity-based water system. In addition, the existing wells in the community are not large enough to support the needed capacity, so a new well will have to be drilled. In addition, an electric pump would need to be purchased and installed. Once installed, the pump will move water through a conduction line from the well to an elevated storage tank which will be constructed as part of the project. This tank will serve not only for water storage but also for water treatment. Once treated, the water will be safe for human consumption. The water will travel through the distribution network, which will be constructed collaboratively among Global Brigades technicians, Global Brigades volunteers, and local community members. Faucets will be installed in each home, which will provide easy access to clean drinking water for the first time in Luminapa.
